Sharmane Flanders
Artist Statement
Sharmane Flanders is a multimedia artist in Portage, Michigan. She received her bachelor’s degree in art at Western Michigan University. Her work can be best described as Surrealism. Her preferred mediums are acrylics and charcoal – however, she pushes the boundaries of these 2-dimensional mediums by incorporating 3-dimensional elements like textile and molding paste. Her passion for helping others and wanting to share her artistic knowledge has brought her to her current job positions; art instructor for adults with disabilities at MRC artWORKS, art teacher at Vicksburg art camps, and she teaches private art lessons for children K-12. Also, her past artist residency at CDF Freedom Schools. She uses art to understand and express her emotions. Her goal is to connect with her viewers through her artwork on a personal level.
