Lucas Gilbert – WMU Student Exhibit

Artist Statement

I’ve been drawing and writing my own original comics for over a decade, creating characters and narratives that I use to inform my work. My main body of work consists of short character-centered scenes, exploring themes such as mental health, trauma and recovery, internalized homophobia, gender dysphoria, and queer identity. I also continue to explore these topics in my work outside of comic and sequential art. My paintings still have narrative qualities, often using collage or print techniques to highlight aspects of the composition.
