James Palmore

Artist Statement

“Palmore says he can look back at life with a perspective that younger people don’t yet have, especially when it comes to “excavating” aspects of African American history. This view allows him to process political and social events with a wider lens, and provide a “mirror” through his art, he says.

“I’ve always investigated things. How does stuff work? How do people work? That’s always been a fascination to me and so that transferred into art subjects and the conditions we live under. Some of my friends don’t think we should use art to make political social statements. But I do.”

Palmore’s philosophy about art encompasses all the styles and mediums he employs. “Art,” he says, “is a polysynthesism of thoughts, dreams, feelings, manifested through the manipulation of a variety of materials, motion, sound, and sense.”
