Suzanne Roche

Artist Statement

Suzanne Lillian was raised in the vast rolling hills of the Midwest landscape just outside Chicago. She has small fragments of memories of early paintings throughout her adolescent years; but these glimpses into her creative connection were quickly lost to the demands of traditional education.

While in college she took her first backpacking trip to Europe. Her eyes opened in wonder to the world as she traveled France, Switzerland, and Germany with her twin sister. She received her first taste to how landscapes and cultures were avenues to greater self discovery and connection.

She worked for nearly over a decade as an occupational therapist. During this time she would find pockets of time to travel; to taste the vastness that exploration into new lands held. During these periods she backpacked South America, India, Ireland, and Costa Rica.

With each homecoming, she felt a deepened calling to return to her creative self. It felt like the only place she could tap into where the depth of who she is could be revealed. Enrolling in a one year art program through the Milan Art Institute, she came back to her creativity and vibrancy. She is forever mesmerized by the depth and connection to be discovered to herself and the world around her. She draws upon lived experiences and dreams of destined lands. Each piece is a glimpse into a visual story that offers memory to that which has often been forgotten.
