Anna Rittenhouse – WMU Student Exhibit

Artist Statement

Residual was made from the dried paint scraped off my old palettes — fragments of past work that I repurposed to create something new. I began the piece shortly after my grandpa passed away, while reflecting on my relationship with my grandparents and the time I spent at their house by the beach. The colors, textures, and effects of this work encapsulate the tenderness of the memories I hold, while also transporting me back to the physical spaces where they were made. This piece became less about loss and more about transformation — about how memory changes shape but never really disappears. Residual holds both the physical traces of my past work and the emotional residue of that period in my life.
