La Jaguar

Artist Statement

La Jaguar (Shanna Collins)’s work shows the interconnected relationship between animals and humans in the Global South, both historically subjugated under Western colonial rule and imperialist violence. Vibrant colors are used to illustrate that the colonial histories of the Global South are not only hidden by Western exoticism, tourism, and fetishism, but the beneath the joyful exterior of the tropics is a violent past and current reality in which animals and indigenous people are continually struggling for survival. Animals in this series are not portrayed as passive spectators, but as the empathetic comrades of marginalized people and active agents against imperial Western aggression.
