Margot Latimer
Artist Statement
Margot is an artist who finds clarity in complexity. Her abstract geometric works are meditations on simplicity, born from a personal redefinition of success.
Growing up in rural Southern Michigan, her time was spent between the quiet immersion of the woods and the river, the solitary focus of drawing, and the joy of storytelling through books and video games. Later, she followed the prescribed path: college, a degree, a stable career. Yet this pursuit of linear success led to a crisis resulting in a period of burnout, anxiety, and depression that demanded a profound change.
For Margot, healing became a process of simplification. Inspired by Thoreau’s imperative to “simplify, simplify, simplify,” she began to weed out the noise of consumerism and external expectations. This philosophy now anchors her life and her art. In her studio, the pursuit of joy, community, and creation takes precedence. Her paintings are where this refined focus manifests: complex, interacting geometries are reduced to their essential forms, inviting contemplation and embodying a hard-won peace.Margot’s work is an invitation to pause, to look closer, and to consider the beauty and calm that can be found when we strip away the superfluous
