Artist Statement
Paul considers himself primarily a segmented turner who tries to incorporate compound angles into his pieces in order to create unique features. Paul describes himself as a bit of a geometry geek and find this type of embellishment challenging which, in turn keeps him motivated. Wood-turned vessels have been found dating back to around the 5th century AD. Turned wooden vessels served as the everyday bowls and cups of most of the population of Europe during that time. As the skills in woodturner have evolved over the last hundred years, the forms produced have become more intricate and complex. Artistic embellishment on wood turned substrates have recently become a large component of the woodturner/ artist in the modern day. Even in the past few decades, wood-turned materials have really shown themselves to be a basis for incredible artistic expression.
