Artist Statement
After retiring from my first career of teaching teaching 5th graders, I decided to take my long time hobby of photography to the next level. My love of nature photography began in my teens while backpacking throughout the Sierra’s and riding horseback though the deserts around Joshua Tree N.P. Using my Canon AT1 film camera, I looked for shots that would help share my experiences with others. I continued taking shots though multiple National Parks while on summer break with my family. I have since switched to digital photography, giving me the ability to
shoot in ”RAW” format in order to bring out the truest representation of that moment as seen through my eyes. I have used my photography in six of the eight books I have written, seven of them for children.
Another favorite hobby of mine is walking the beaches of Lake Michigan and collecting Petoskey Stones. Many of those stones I have used in my mobiles, wine bottle topper, bottle openers, magnets, picture holders, and wine glasses. You can check out some of my creations at sandyboots.biz and I hope to see you the November Art Hop in Kalamazoo.
