Black Lives Matter Mural Project

Artist Statement

Following the death of George Floyd in May of 2020, artists around Kalamazoo created and installed artwork that became part of our city’s backdrop for several months. Windows which were boarded up over the course of one week on the Kalamazoo Mall were painted to show that love and unity in our community can’t be shaken or driven to violence. Bringing with them messages of hope and calling silent attention to the systemic problem of racism within our society.

The May 5th Art Hop is a celebration of public art. The Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo has acquired 9 panels of the BLM Mural Project from the Downtown Kalamazoo Partnership and will have them on display in the hallway outside of the Westin gallery on the second floor of the Epic Center.
