Artist Statement
Derek has been a photographer in Kalamazoo for nearly 20 years. For the last 10 years, his focus has been around documenting the vibrant music scene in Kalamazoo while working as a photojournalist at localspins.com. Covering everything from artists just starting out to established regional and national touring acts that stop at venues like Bell’s Eccentric Cafe, Kalamazoo State Theatre, and Wings Event Center.
