Artist Statement

Eugenia Apawu, the Nurturing Therapist: “Nurturing. Refreshing. Healing” is an adopted new name of a disabled individual, licensed massage practitioner, licensed cosmetologist, and entrepreneur, who is on a healing journey and making a comeback after ten years of displacement from the workforce. She is looking for opportunities to showcase and share her endowed healing craftsmanship and creative skills with the greater Kalamazoo communities and beyond.

She performs onsite healing, comfort touch, and therapeutic massage therapy. These immediately foster calmness, relaxation, stress, and pain relief. The emotional or traumatic healing encounter transcends into the body, mind, and soul and only the recipients can explain their feelings. A seated chair and/or massage table are used, and clients are fully clothed during such events.

Her formerly owned small spa in Niles, Michigan was known as Beauty and Body Wellness Day Spa, LLC. It was in full session from January 2008 until August 2013 when sudden illness and other incidents displaced her from work. She volunteered her massage services at the Father Ted 5/10K Run and Walk – University of Notre Dame and Run Jane Run -South Bend, IN as well as at Krasl Art Fair – Saint Joseph, Niles Bensidoun French Market, Berrien Relay for Life, and lastly, Skip’s European Farmers Market, New Buffalo, MI.

Finding ways to combat her misfortunes, she began studies at Western Michigan University in Fall 2020 via Zoom and online classes. However she is currently enrolled at Kalamazoo Valley Community College (KVCC) for general studies.

She is an active member and avid volunteer in this city since she moved here in May 2021. She has been advocating for and helping families with children from Pre-K to 12 grade. She mentors college-bound students, and encourages non-English speakers to enroll in KPS’s English as Second Language Program. Also, she’s keen on seeking help in restoring abandoned community gardens. An example is Kzoo Northside Gardens. She is sought after for speaking engagements on healing, gardening, diversity, and cultural events.
