Felix Sunflower

Artist Statement

Felix Sunflower is a predominantly self-taught artist based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. His experiences as a queer, transsexual, and neurodivergent creature inform many of his artworks, and he tends to focus on themes of growth, death, rebirth, and love. Transformation and liminality are often present in his work, as he explores what it means to embrace the things that make one monstrous and alive. Despite – or perhaps because of – this, play is also an important constant in Felix’s work and life. It is imperative that he can remain silly. Most of Felix’s creations are linocut/block prints or acrylic paintings, but he also enjoys exploring as many mediums as he can get his hands on. Recently he has been spending more time creating zines and playing with oil pastels. Felix is inspired by myth and legend, creature features, ghost stories, and old cartoons. He appreciates character-driven storytelling, which he likes to emulate in his work. When he is not creating artwork, Felix enjoys baking for his loved ones and practicing the ukulele. The act of creation is a necessity and something that Felix will never be able to live without.
