Heather Boersma

Artist Statement

Heather Boersma loves intense color and seeing unusual shades next to each other, just as she loves intense people from divergent backgrounds, and a blended and unpolished neighborhood—old and young, shabby, and manicured, all sharing experiences and sharing a street. She like how colors elicit emotion or memories, like wearing too much lipstick or the algae in a fish tank. As an artist who has always made art from her home, surrounded by her own children, their humor, art, and fanciful costumes, she was inspired by the Southwest tradition of the God’s Eye—created by parents as prayers for their children. The diamond shape throws off our typical way of seeing art as either landscape or portrait, and the bands of color draw the viewer into the center like a door to another world. Heather Boersma wants her art to help people see the world with fresh eyes.
