Artist Statement

KIRK NEWMAN EXHIBIT + AUCTION EXTENDED! Due to an abundance of inquiries and interest, the December 2023 Kirk Newman exhibit in the Westin Gallery at the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo offices will be on display through the end of January 2024. This exhibit offers maquettes and prints available for purchase. The gallery is open Tuesdays – Fridays from 8:00 am – 6:00 pm.

The Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo is holding a silent auction featuring an exclusive collection of works by Kirk Newman – an artist who shared his time, talent, and gifts with Kalamazoo and evidence of his legacy can be viewed in public art offerings and educational programs all over the greater community.

All proceeds from this event will go towards the MAGIK program which is specifically designed to support collaborative initiatives between community groups or neighborhood associations and artists or arts organizations working with youth. These projects play a crucial role in the growth and development of youth participants, fostering meaningful impacts on the neighborhoods and communities in which they are implemented.

The silent auction will be open only from 12:00 pm to 8:00 pm EST on Friday, December 1, 2023, at the Westin Gallery in the Arts Council office. For those unable to attend in person, an online platform will be available for bidding, and computer access will be provided in the gallery.

This is an extraordinary opportunity to acquire pieces of Kirk Newman’s artistic journey. The silent auction will showcase framed drawings, prints, wrapped prints, and maquettes created by Newman throughout his lifetime. Patrons attending the event will also have the unique privilege of exploring Newman’s process sketchbooks, providing insight into the creative mind of this exceptional artist.

“We are excited to celebrate Kirk Newman’s artistic contributions and further support the creative endeavors that enhance our community,” said Kristen Chesak, Executive Director at the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo. “This auction provides a unique opportunity for art enthusiasts to own a piece of Newman’s legacy while contributing to the positive impact of the MAGIK grant.”
