Artist Statement
These Black artists extend the Institute’s commitment to shared knowledge by making Black life, memory, and imagination central to the story of art across generations. From Romare Bearden and Charles White to Elizabeth Catlett, Gordon Parks, Mose Tolliver, Purvis Young, Mickalene Thomas, and E.J. Montgomery, their work braids formal innovation with lived experience to reclaim history, confront racial violence, and honor Black resilience. Together, they create a continuum from an artist born enslaved in the nineteenth century to today’s visionaries- in which Black art operates as public scholarship: witnessing, teaching. and helping communities imagine more just and liberated futures.
