Artist Statement
Pedro Rafael is a Mexican American artist whose work is rooted in the past, present, and future. He draws his inspiration from the colors, textures, and stories he grew up with. His art is a way of telling his story and honoring his heritage while also exploring his own voice. He often incorporates neon colors inspired by the vibrancy of Mexican culture and the rhythm of his mixed cultural experiences. His process is experimental; he learns by doing, layering, and discovering as he goes. What guides him is a desire to connect—whether through a shared sense of nostalgia, a touch of sadness, or an everlasting glimmer of hope. For him, art is both a practice of remembering and a form of storytelling. Each piece carries fragments of familia, comunidad, y cultura, reimagined in his own way. By creating without strict boundaries, he celebrates the freedom of expression that comes from being self-taught, while embracing the complexity of living between worlds.
