Artist Statement
Sara Engman-Slaughter is an artist, illustrator, and freelance graphic/web designer working out of Kalamazoo, MI.
“As an artist, I like to dabble and experiment in many different art forms and styles. My most current work concerns the environment around me and the animal inhabitants of it. I would say my latest style grew organically from painting in the environment, plein aire style. As I became more curious about the landscape around me, having spent a great amount of time suspending myself within it, I became more and more aware of the animal inhabitants not typically captured in the plein aire style. I began to study the nature of the Great Lakes region, becoming fascinated by the sheer biodiversity that I was only marginally aware of before. This latest work attempts to capture that fascination, to show the nature of the Great Lakes region in all of its finery, and bring awareness not just to the beauty that surrounds us, but the perils in which it finds itself.”
