Artist Statement
Sara Engman-Slaughter is an artist, illustrator, and freelance graphic/web designer working out of Kalamazoo, MI. As an artist, Sara likes to dabble and experiment in many different art forms and styles. Her most current work concerns the environment and the animal inhabitants of it. Sara says her latest style grew organically from painting in the environment, en plein air style. As she became more curious about the landscape around her, having spent a great amount of time suspending herself within it, she became more and more aware of the animal inhabitants not typically captured in the en plein air style. Sara began to study the nature of the Great Lakes region, becoming fascinated by the sheer biodiversity that she was only marginally aware of before. This latest work attempts to capture that fascination, to show the nature of the Great Lakes region in all of its finery and bring awareness not just to the beauty that surrounds us, but the perils in which it finds itself.
