Artist Statement
Nikki Horner is an oil painter and fabric artist based in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Her work explores the relationship between memory, landscape, and the quiet rhythms of life, drawing inspiration from the natural world and a deep appreciation for simplicity. Raised among the forests, rivers, and rugged coastline of Oregon, Horner developed an early connection to nature that continues to influence her creative practice. The subtle colors, organic forms, and sense of stillness found in her work often reflect these formative experiences. Horner earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Oregon State University, where she concentrated in oil painting and developed a foundation in both traditional technique and contemporary visual expression. Working across oil paint and textile-based mediums, she creates pieces that balance delicacy and strength, often embracing restraint, texture, and negative space as integral elements of composition. Her artistic approach is rooted in observation—of natural environments, shifting seasons, life, and the fleeting moments that might otherwise go unnoticed.
