Shaquona Espinoza
Artist Statement
Shaquona Espinoza is a visual artist born and raised in Kalamazoo. She has been creating since a youth and began her career in artistry in 2018. Her love for art and rediscovery of self, allowed her to create acrylic paintings based on florals and portraits of prophetic individuals. Espinoza’s artwork consists of black and white portraits of musical artists from the 70s-90s. Her love for different genres of music such as soul, r&b and hip hop has inspired her to create these pieces. She hopes that the black and white paintings will provide viewers with a sense of nostalgia and remembrance.
My collage work aims to connect Black people to the beauty and power of nature in ways that are historically, politically culturally denied to us.
