About

Fire exists as a brave space nurturing youth through creativity to express, heal, and connect with self and others, inspiring a community of truth and freedom. Our programming combines arts education with quality youth development to support youth ages 13-20 where they are, and guide them to a healthy life of social and emotional learning. We have a combination of regular programs we offer, like workshops and open mics, in addition to narrower programs that more closely follow the drive and desire of the youth who lead them. Unlike many youth programs that go over 6-8 weeks, we find success in offering continual open opportunities for youth to engage, in addition to more specialized opportunities. Fire’s First Friday Open Mic is the longest-running Open Mic in Kalamazoo, and now the state of Michigan. We are the only sober, youth-centered space where youth can come and perform in a social setting. Youth come from all over the county for an emotional and sometimes raucous night to share their songs, poems, comedy skits and even theatrical routines.
