Unwinding Movement Art

Artist Statement

Jasper Lee Sowle, They/Them, is a self-taught Artist based in Kalamazoo, MI and is the sole Artist behind Unwinding Movement Art. They see Art as a way to tell stories, an avenue to return to Nature, a method in which we can begin to understand ourselves and others more. The word Art is more of a verb, it’s a being and a living. It’s a way of interpreting life around us; relating to it, moving with it, feeling the interdependence between all sentient form. Art is about learning, it’s about seeing, feeling, and resonating. Being an Artist is about being aware of the pace in which we’re in relationship with what we’re creating, documenting, filming, experiencing. It’s having a space between you and what’s surrounding you so there’s room for all life to respond and for all life to play off each other’s responses. Art is consensual, fluid and life-giving. This is why Jasper chooses to gravitate towards fluid acrylic, fellow humans, and water as mediums. These relationships require them to pay attention to real-time consent and to have nuanced skill at facilitation and intuiting non-verbal communication, which Jasper embodies. Jasper’s intention with their work
when creating is to mend the consensual interdependence between humans, creation, and land. Jasper’s intention with their work when presenting it to the world is to expand the possibilities of perspective and relationship.
